MAGSTRIPE SWIPE CARDS ARE BEING PHASED OUT ON THE N3 TOLL ROUTE

Tap and go payment offers improved security and more convenience

From 01 December 2024, VISA and Mastercard magstripe (swipe) cards will no longer be accepted for payment at all the mainline and ramp toll plazas on the N3 Toll Route. These include the following plazas:

KwaZulu-Natal

  • Mooi Mainline
  • Mooi South Ramp Plaza
  • Mooi Treverton Ramp Plaza
  • Tugela Mainline Plaza
  • Tugela East Ramp Plaza
  • Bergville Ramp Plaza

Free State

  • Wilge Mainline Plaza

Gauteng

  • De Hoek Mainline Plaza

“The magstripe payment option is being replaced by the more convenient tap and go payment method. This change enables real-time payments and enhanced security as your card need never leave your possession,” explains Thania Dhoogra, chief operating officer of N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), the company managing the N3 Toll Route between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng.

Road users can choose between any of the following payment options at toll plazas on the N3 Toll Route:

  • Tap-enabled debit or credit cards (i.e., MasterCard or VISA with a chip and issued by South African banks)
  • Smart devices (smartphones or smartwatches with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, etc) which are linked to a virtual or physical bank card
  • Tags
  • Cash
  • Fleet cards

“N3TC encourages road users to *be prepared for this innovative change* and to ensure they are ready to make their journeys on the N3 Toll Route even better,” stresses Ms Dhoogra. “We hope you will enjoy improved safety, convenience and mobility.”
